That was a good discussion. I fully agree with Alice’s stance on the mortgage interest deduction; however, the discussion of “her favorite example” was a bit misleading from an historical perpective. Alice suggests that the deduction got into the tax code for the purpose of “encouraging home ownership”. Actually, the deduction has existed from the beginning (1913) and originally had nothing to do with encouraging home ownership. It likely survived the 1986 TRA for that reason, but it was not created for that reason, as explained in the following article which calls it “the accidental deduction”:

ou actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I抣l try to get the hang of it!
